The Man With The Wig (Part 1 of 3)

It was yet another hot summer day. The girls finished their home work, had their lunch and sat down to play in Ari's bedroom. But Bri is bored of the game and she walks over to the window, looking out at a lifeless road, with not a soul outside in the scorching sun. Across the street, she notices a man holding a wig, setting it right. What was he up to?  "Ari, come, look", Bri called out.  Ari walked over to the window and saw the man put on the wig and adjusting it in the mirror.  "Is that a hat? Wow he looks so different with that thing", Ari remarked.  "Thing? It's called a wig", answered Bri, "It's like artificial hair" "But it doesn't look artificial. If I didn't see him put it on, I would have thought it's real. It fits very well on him", Ari said fascinated. She had never seen a wig before. Well, she would have clearly not known the difference anyway she thought as both the girls continued to watch the man

Lost and Found

All she saw was an empty space where it had been... Squinting hard at her precious collection of books, Ari tried to remember which of her books was missing. Will she find what she's lost? Class III had 4 small book shelves at the four corners of the classroom. Each book shelf had 4 rows and every child in the class had a row assigned to them. Ari's was on the top most row of the shelf at the farthest corner of the classroom, right next to a big, bright window. The students kept their favorite story books on their assigned shelves and were allowed to pick their book of choice during the reading hour, every Tuesday 2pm.  It was seven minutes past 2 and Ari was still furiously staring at the gap between the books on her shelf, willing herself to recollect which book had been missing. The empty space between the books reminded Ari of the gap in her teeth. She lost a tooth two days ago, it was her first. Her mom said a new one would grow in its place. But what about the gap in th

The Day The Sun Didn't Rise

One day the sun doesn't rise at its appointed time. All life on Earth goes in to a panic mode. Dogs start howling, humans are anxious, birds gather in huge groups blanketing the sky. Worried about what's happening on Earth, the moon and the stars go to check on the Sun.  "Do you think the Sun is in danger?" asked the Stars. Moon tried to keep calm though it was thinking the same thought. "Let's hope not", Moon answered as it knocked the door.  Sun answered, looking a bit pale. "Oh thank goodness, you're all ok", the Stars & Moon heaved a huge sigh of relief. "Everybody is so worried about you, Sun".  "I am not ok", Sun said sadly as it let Stars and Moon into it's house. "I don't know why but I don't feel ok." "What do you mean?", asked the Stars, "Are you running out of Hydrogen?".  "Calm down Stars, Sun won't be running out of Hydrogen for a few billion years"

A Variable Called "X"

Magical entities called "Variables" thrived on Earth for as long as the planet existed. They live in plain sight and yet humans are unaware of these beings. Why? Because Variables have a special power - every full moon they transform into a new character. You could come in contact with a Variable and never know it. They can become any character - a dog, a cat, a racoon, even a human being! They have many skills given the varied experiences they have had. They have so much more perspective than an average human does. You can call them the wisest beings on the plant.  Now the time has come for the full moon night. The moon is just starting to come into focus behind a slowly moving set of clouds... Variable "X" is wondering what's in store this time... X could feel the changes in it's body. It's a tingling process. The closest description to what a transformation feels like is when X ate a crackling chocolate as a human kid. It felt like tiny, harmless fire
